An iconic fashion model in the 1960s, she became a muse to Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Arthur Penn, and Richard Avedon. As a pioneering feminist in the 1970s, she fought for the rights and emancipation of women. By at the age of 75, however, she is fed up with the roles life has imposed upon her and decides to leave everything and everyone behind and disappear to a place as far as possible from the gaze of the camera. Only her son, Beniamino, is permitted to witness her journey. Having filmed her since his childhood (despite her resistance), Beniamino now wants to make a film about his mother to keep her close for as long as possible–or, at least, as long as his camera keeps rolling. The making of the film turns into a battle between mother and son, a stubborn fight to capture the ultimate image of Benedetta–that of her liberation. Saw this today at the Angelica movie theatre in NYC.  It is three hours long, but the story was very engaging and the time went quickly.   This is what cinema should storytelling, great script, great actors and visually engaging.  I for one would nominate this film for an Oscar.  Even though the film was in German with English subtitles I hardly noticed that the film was in German. The Disappearance of My Mother is a successful piece of documentary filmmaking inasmuch as it’s entertaining and dextrously crafted. Seldom has a movie’s subject so frequently told its creator to f*** off. As far as we can tell, she’s right to do so; surely there’s a point at which familial love is more important than badgering a loved one “for art’s sake. ” Happy to escape a fatherless home and wealth-obsessed mother, Italian teen Barzini was “discovered” in 1963, quickly rising to international success. We see her posing in couture fashions of the era, hanging out with such A-list patrons as Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon. But she became disillusioned, the Women’s Liberation movement opening her eyes to feminist (and Marxist) principles in direct opposition to her professional world of consumerist glamour. She now teaches fashion students, training them not in sales or design but in parsing those industries’ objectification of women. She dresses down to accept a local award and hates being recognized as a celebrity. It’s her dream to disappear onto an island so remote that computers, telephones – and those dreaded cameras – cannot reach it.
